Alex Berkowitz, Founder & Principal
Alex Berkowitz founded Sweet Clover Landscapes, LLC with a belief that landscape design, art, and agriculture are interdisciplinary fields that can be united to make extraordinary living environments. She graduated from The University of Chicago with a B.A. in Visual Arts in conjunction with The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She continued her studies in the Professional Landscape Design program at The New York Botanical Gardens.
Alex brings a unique professional background to the field of landscape design. Alex has worked as a chef with Michelin starred celebrity chefs at NYC restaurants, and as the Senior R&D Chef at Fresh Direct. She holds a certificate from The French Culinary Institute for “La Technique”. She honed her skills in creating concepts and immersive brand experiences working for Food Network and HGTV. Alex is a classically trained fine artist, whose work has been exhibited internationally, and has worked as a set designer for theatre and film. Her expertise in these fields allows her to draw on her creativity and vast culinary knowledge to create one-of-a-kind gardens and landscapes that reflect the individual personalities of her clients.
Alex is deeply rooted in the principles of organic and sustainable practices. Initially, when she was laying the foundation for a career in horticulture and food, she developed her own farm-to-plate training program in rural upstate New York. By day, she worked on an organic and bio-dynamic farm that specialized in flowers and vegetables, and by night, she cooked with that day’s harvest at the world-famous Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, NY. Her farm-to-table, and organic studies continue to guide her principles in making Sweet Clover Landscapes a sustainable and organic driven company.
Alex draws on a lifetime of personal experiences living and travelling abroad in Europe and Asia. She has been particularly inspired by the landscapes of France and Italy, the Japanese Zen aesthetic, and the lush tropical gardens of South East Asia.
Alex is associated with multiple professional landscape organizations such as The American Horticultural Society, The Horticultural Society of NY, New York Botanical Gardens Alumni Group. Recently Alex completed a public pollinator garden with the NYC Parks Department.
Alex is a frequent public speaker and teacher on the subject of Sustainable Landscaping, Edible Gardening, and Environmental Landscape Design.
